This week we explored Canberra, Australia’s capital, before meeting our international visitors in Melbourne!
On Sunday, we spent the day in Canberra exploring our neighbourhood on the Kingston foreshore. We walked along the lake and looked in some little shops.
Then, we went to the Old Bus Depot Market. The market had food vendors, clothing, jewellery, and souvenirs. It was cool to walk through the stalls and see what the people were selling.
Later that day we went for a walk along the waterfront, in the city centre. We saw all the flags in the Commonwealth flying. Then, Webster rented an electric scooter and went for a ride!
On Monday, we started our day at the Australian Parliament buildings for a tour. We walked through the public access areas with a group learning about democracy, their current prime minister, and Australian governmental history.
After our tour, we went into the Senate and House of Representatives to see democracy in action. We weren’t allowed to take photos but we were in attendance for a Q&A period with Australian PM Anthony Albanese.
In the afternoon, we went to the Australian War Memorial for the Last Post Ceremony. The ceremony runs once a day, honouring an Australian solider who lost their life and sharing their story. Then, the Last Post is played on a trumpet. It is a great way to see a beautiful building in Canberra.
Later that night, we went to a famous chicken restaurant for dinner!
On Tuesday, we spent the day driving from Canberra to Melbourne. We drove 700km, mostly on one highway connecting the two cities. We checked into our AirBnB and had a quiet night unpacking.
On Wednesday, Mom & Wayne were delayed in transit so we spent the day exploring the local neighbourhood in Melbourne. Our first stop was the South Melbourne Market. Since 1867, South Melbourne Market has been a treasured inner city landmark and a favourite amongst locals and visitors. It is the quintessential village market, a place where people come not only to purchase fresh food, but to meet, eat, drink, shop, discover, share and connect.
We spent the evening working and making some food in our AirBnB. Then, we went to Hawker Chan for dinner, a restaurant we discovered in Singapore, known for the cheapest Michelin star meal in the world.
On Thursday morning, Mom & Wayne arrived at Melbourne International Airport. I went to go pick them up, and bring them back to the AirBnB.
After a quick shower, we were on the move, in hopes of overcoming jet lag. Our first stop was Brother Baba Budan, a coffee shop in central Melbourne.
We spent the afternoon exploring central Melbourne, riding a tram, and walking down laneways and alleys to see the street art.
On Friday, we went back to South Melbourne Market for lunch! I had a fresh croissant, Webster had borek, and Mom had fish and chips.
Later, we went to Melbourne Skydeck, the southern hemisphere’s highest observation deck, nearly 300 metres high.
That night, Mom, Webster and I, went to Din Tai Fung, a delicious dumping restaurant, that has been awarded five Michelin stars (Mom’s first Michelin star restaurant!).
On Saturday, we started our day with homemade eggs benedict before going on a walking tour with I’m Free Melbourne Walking Tours. We explored the State Library, local architecture, Carleton Gardens, the Royal Exhibition Buildings, state parliament, and Chinatown.
In the afternoon, we went on a Yarra River cruise with Melbourne River Cruises. We cruised south along the river, through the city, and into the dockyards.
In the evening, we returned to our favourite Aussie steakhouse, Hunter and Barrel for dinner. It was delicious!
This week we are staying in Southern Victoria. We are exploring Great Ocean Road, Werribee Open Range Zoo, and Phillip Island. We have one more week with Mom & Wayne, so we are making the most of it!
Thanks for following along - see you next week!
