We can’t believe it’s already June! It’s Autumn here so it’s getting colder every day in Sydney, making it a little bit easier to study.
On Monday and Tuesday we spent our days at school. I had to submit two projects and complete an in class quiz. Webster had two quizzes and met with his project group three times in preparation for their submission next week.
On Wednesday I volunteered in the morning as usual. It was week 9 of 10, so we are getting close to the end. My kiddies were extra distracted this week so we spent most of our time playing math board games.
Webster played ultimate frisbee all afternoon before we headed to Vivid with Marshall. Marshall is a family friend from Ontario who is here for an internship. He doesn’t start work until next week so we spent some time this week hanging out around the city. We walked along the harbour to see everything lit up. We first went below the Harbour Bridge, on top of the Overseas Passenger Terminal to get great views of the opera house. Then we headed around the harbour to the Opera House side to see great views of the bridge. Since it was a week night it was not nearly as busy as it was on the weekend. We were able to walk without bumping into people and get up close to some of the displays. It was SO cold, the coldest it has ever been since we arrived so after we saw all the major sites we headed inside for some food. We had a great meal chatting about school and life in Sydney.
On Thursday we woke up early to call Grandmom on her birthday! It was Wednesday night at home and she had lots of guests over. We spent the morning/early afternoon studying and taking the first dose of our last vaccine for Asia.
In the evening we headed to Darling Harbour with Marshall to see the Vivid displays there. We hadn’t seen Darling Harbour all lit up and we were expecting more than it delivered. They had a robot display and some street performers that kept us busy for a little bit. Then we headed to Blacklight, a glow in the dark dessert bar we had read about online. We didn’t end up getting anything but it was neat to see the desserts they were serving glow. We ended our night with a quick bite to eat on the waterfront.
On Friday morning we woke up early to watch the Raptors play in Game 1. We went back to Cheers, a Sydney pub that streams the game live. It was packed! Full of people in Canada gear ready to cheer on the Raptors.
Afterwards, we spent our afternoon studying for exams. With only 3 weeks left until our first exams we are trying to find a few hours every day.
In the evening, we headed to Marshall’s hotel rooftop bar to watch the fireworks over Darling Harbour. We had a great view of the fireworks and the Vivid displays. We spent the evening chatting about our summer travel plans and all the things we recommend seeing in Sydney.
On Saturday, we woke up nice and early to do the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk. We had done the last half of the walk before, from Bronte to Bondi, but wanted to check the full thing off our list. We took a bus to Coogee and then walked 8km winding up and down the cliff edges. Although it was cloudy at some points we really enjoyed watching the big waves and the surfers in the water.
Once we got to Bondi, we jumped on a bus and then a train to introduce Marshall to Mary’s Burgers in Newtown - our favourite Sydney burger! Marshall and I both had burgers, and Webster tried their chicken wings, it was delicious!
We spent our evening getting some more school work done. I submitted a big project worth 40% but I still have 11 chapters to read this week. Webster worked on his big project due next week.
On Sunday we had a nice sleep in, and watched a movie before getting up. We spent the morning and afternoon working on some school work and packing some stuff up in our AirBnB. We have been trying to get rid of the things we aren’t going to need for the next part of our journey slowly.
In the evening we headed to a hidden bar in Surry Hills called Soda Factory. It is a fully functioning bar hidden behind a real functioning business. We wandered in through the Hot Dog Shop, then went behind the Coke machine into the bar - it was so cool! We enjoyed some soda pop inspired drinks while taking in the atmosphere.
Afterwards we headed for some more famous Sydney Burgers at Bar Luca. Webster went all out and tried the Blame Canada burger: beef pattie, American cheese, maple glazed bacon, maple aioli & poutine!
This week we are back to school. It is my last week of classes and volunteering. We are hoping to get a few more things done on our to-do list, and spend a few more nights at Vivid checking out all the lights.
