On Monday we started our week a little differently and headed out for breakfast before school. We read about Bourne Street Bakery in a Lonely Planet Sydney book and had to try it! They make all their own breakfast pies, sausage rolls, pastries and bread. It was so busy we had to line up out the door on a Monday at 9:30am. Webster got a sausage roll and I got a ham and cheese croissant. It was a great way to start our week and we highly recommend Bourke Street Bakery for a breakfast out in Sydney!
We spent the rest of our day at school, going to class and getting some assignments done.
On Tuesday we had another busy day at school. We are both starting to get caught up after taking a few weeks off.
On Wednesday I went to volunteer as usual. My three girls are making great improvements! I can’t believe I only have two weeks left! Webster spent the morning and early afternoon at school with group projects and tutorials. In the evening he went to ultimate frisbee for a few hours.
On Thursday we had a long day of studying. We both finally got our exam schedules and have exams from June 20-27. Since it’s approaching quickly we have been trying to get a head start on studying and reading our textbooks. In the evening we headed down to Darling Harbour for dinner. We wanted to try Betty’s Burgers, which has been on our list for a while. Betty’s was a famous burger shop in Northern Queensland that has expanded over the past year to Sydney, Melbourne and other major cities. I had a spicy chicken burger and Webster had their original beef burger. We thought the burgers were well made with great toppings but a poor value for their high cost. Regardless, we really enjoyed sitting outside at Darling Harbour watching all the people walk by.
On Friday morning we had a nice little sleep in. Then we headed towards Town Hall to go out for breakfast at the Grounds of the City. We first went to the Grounds with Paisley and Liz a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it so we thought we would go again! Thankfully we made a reservation for 11am because when we arrived it was lined up around the building. We were quickly seated and placed our orders. Webster had a cappuccino and I had a deconstructed iced mocha. We had a delicious breakfast chatting about our weekend plans and making a to do list for our summer plans.
Afterwards we walked through Hyde Park to the Hospital Mint Museum. We had walked by the museum a few times and Webster was really keen to get inside and see what it was all about. We learned that the hospital had been funded by rum money when the Europeans first arrived in Australia. Then later it was used as a mint to store gold. Although the building was beautifully restored, the “museum” was a hallway in a building turned into offices and event spaces. It was a bit of a letdown but we spent some time wandering the halls exploring.
Then in the evening we headed to Moore Park to the Sydney Cricket Ground for a Aussie Rules Football game. We both didn’t really know what to expect but when we arrived the were pleasantly surprised! We saw the Sydney Swans play the Collingwood Magpies in a full stadium of 35,000 people. The game was a little hard to follow as there were TONS of people on the huge field at a time and the clock counted upwards, not down to 0. It was fun to be in a section with lots of seasons tickets holders who were very loud and spirited. Although Sydney did not win, it was a fun night out!
On Saturday we spent most of the day getting some work done, relaxing, and doing laundry. Then in the evening we headed to Circular Quay for Vivid. Vivid is a light, music and idea festival which can be seen projected onto buildings in central Sydney. Vivid just started on Friday and is on for 5 hours every night for the next 3 weeks. When we arrived we underestimated how many people would be there - it was mayhem! We spent some time walking the harbour taking photos and enjoying the music. Then we headed on top of the Overseas Passenger Terminal to the American Express Lounge where we had great views of the Opera House! It was lit up in all different colours, it was spectacular!
On Sunday we woke up early to head to Cheers, a local pub that was showing the live Raptors game. Everyone was wearing whatever Canada gear they could find, Jays t-shirts, Leafs jerseys, Roots sweatpants, Team Canada hats, etc. It was neat to watch the game with other Canadians. Cheers did a good job at promoting Canadian culture, they even served poutine! It’s really hard for Webster to watch live sports in our time zone so it was a treat to enjoy it in live time.
We spent the afternoon grocery shopping and meal prepping for the week. Then once it got dark we headed back to the harbour to see Vivid again but from a ferry. We went to Darling Harbour first and took a ferry under the Harbour Bridge, past the Opera House and the Botanical Gardens. We got a great view of all that was happening without the huge crowds. It was just as amazing on night two.
This week we are back to school for our second last week of classes! We have some more Vivid activities on our to do list and are hoping to check out a few more restaurants. With only four more weeks in this beautiful city, we are making the most of every moment.
