Our week started off like they all do, we both headed off to school for a full day of classes. Things are starting to ramp up and assignments are closing in on their due dates. We are looking forward to our reading week coming up in April. Since we have moved AirBnB’s our commute is a little bit different than before. Webster has a short bike ride to and from school, only about 15 minutes. I walk to the train station, about 10 minutes away, and then hop on an express train right out to my school, 25 minutes. It is nice to be closer to more public transport options here.
On Tuesday, we both had another full day of class! I had my first in class presentation and Webster was busy working with a group on a big project. In the evening, we booked our trip to Vietnam! We are headed on a National Geographic Tour for 14 days in July. We will travel with photographers working on the magazine and visit some spots not all tourists get to see. We are SO excited!
On Wednesday, I headed to my volunteering session in the morning. My kiddies are still struggling a bit with their math but their confidence has really improved! It is nice to see them try and tackle math problems without giving up. Webster spent the morning at school studying and at tutorial.
In the evening we headed to the Sydney Opera House for a show! This is something we had on our must-do list while in Sydney. We had our eye on a few shows but ended up booking A Choir of Man because they were reasonably priced. We headed to the Opera House at sunset, about an hour before the show started to get some photos and pick up our tickets. Once the doors opened, we headed into the Studio, a smaller performance space that holds about 250 people. It was great because everyone had a wonderful seat. They sang for about 90 minutes on a pub themed stage. They played all their own instruments and sang a variety of songs so everyone could sing along. It was a really fun show! They perform all over the world and we would see them again if our paths crossed!
On Thursday, we both headed to UTS to study all day. We were really productive and managed to get a lot of work done. Webster had 3 group meetings back to back. I read 5 chapters and finished an assignment. We are trying to work ahead so we don’t have to do any school work when our visitors arrive in 2 weeks!
On Friday, it was rainy so we spent the day studying again...I know, it’s been a week full of school work! For a change of scenery we spent our afternoon at Starbucks working away. After a long afternoon of studying we headed to Spice Alley for dinner. We had heard about Spice Alley on some Sydney foodie blogs and wanted to try it out. It is a little alley, meant to look like an Asian street market. All the stalls have painted carts on the front, but a full take away shop inside. Everyone orders through a window and eats in the main dining area. There were about 12 restaurants to choose from, most which were Asian inspired. It was a really popular place especially on a Friday night. Webster had Black Pepper Beef and I had Cashew Chicken - although it was VERY spicy, it was delicious!
On Saturday we slept in a little bit before heading to the Bondi Icebergs Pool. At Bondi Beach there is a pool that is filled with salt water from the ocean. It is a real swimmers pool, but has recently become famous for people to lounge around, take a dip and get soaked by the waves breaking along the edge. We were brave and spent some time on the edge after soaking up the hot sun for a few hours. Needless to say, we got soaked before we even got in the pool, and yes it was FREEZING.
In the evening we headed to Darling Harbour for a nice dinner out. Darling Harbour is on the opposite side of the Harbour Bridge from the Opera House. It is a shallower area so big boats can’t come in like they can on the other side. The harbour front is filled with shops, restaurants, and street performers. Every Saturday night they host fireworks for 10 minutes at 9pm. It is a great way to get people out and spending money in the area! We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Hunter and Barrel, a steakhouse on the water. We haven’t gone for a nice dinner on this trip yet so it was nice to spend time chatting over a good meal. We both had a delicious steak! Afterwards, we walked along the water and got dessert at the Lindt store. We found a good spot above all the crowds of people, just outside a wedding reception to see the fireworks display. It was a really fun way to end our Saturday!
On Sunday, daylight savings time ended in Sydney so we had one extra hour of sleep. We used it to our benefit and woke up nice and early to head to another beach! We took a ferry from Circular Quay (near the Opera House) to Manly beach, the north head of the river into Sydney. The ferry was packed with people because the weather was beautiful, 26 and sunny! When we arrived at the beach we were surprised at how busy it was. Bondi wasn’t nearly as busy the day before. We made the most of the crowds and found a spot in the sand. Webster didn’t last to long in the sun before heading off into the water, he splashed along with 1000 of his closest friends. After a few hours we called it a day and headed back into the city centre.
In the evening we spent some time meal prepping, doing laundry and submitting a few assignments. This week we are going on a day trip to Cockatoo Island and going to Coogee Beach! Thanks for following along!
