Our week has been full of new adventures, long school days, and finally some sunshine!
On Monday both Webster and I went to school for the day. We had a long day of lectures, tutorials and studying. It was a beautiful day which made it harder to stay focused but we soaked up the sun between classes when we got the chance. Then after school, I was really craving a Costco hot dog. We took a bus out to an industrial area, to have dinner at Costco! The hot dog and drink deal was a little bit more expensive than at home, and we can now confirm that the hot dogs here aren’t as good as Canada.
On Tuesday, we headed back to school for another long day. I got some work done between classes so we had more time to explore this weekend. Webster spent 12 long hours in class, learning, and making new friends!
On Wednesday I had my first morning of volunteering! I am working with grade 2-5 kids to improve their reading and math skills. I arrived at the school and was given a schedule to meet with three students, one after another. Elementary school here is much different than at home. Students can pay to take part in deluxe extracurricular activities during the school day like violin, piano, and sports. It was a great way to meet other volunteers, and fill my morning when Webster had school.
In the afternoon we finalized our schedule for Asia in the summer. We are really excited to start booking our adventure! If anyone wants to join us for a few days, a week, or is planning on being in the same area, we would love to meet up! I have included our schedule below:
Singapore June 30-4
Kuala Lumpur July 4-7
Cambodia July 7-14
Vietnam July 14-30
Japan July 30-8
Hong Kong August 9-11
Thailand August 11-22
Taiwan August 22-24
Alaska August 24-Sept 4
On Thursday we had a nice sleep in and then went out for coffee in the afternoon! Australian iced coffee is made with ice cream so it is dangerously delicious. We spent some time figuring out our few weekends away in Australia and planning a schedule for when family come to visit.
On Friday we had a slow morning getting some school work done. In the afternoon, we headed to Circular Quay to enjoy a drink by the water. It was overcast, but nice and warm, so we decided to take advantage of the weather! We sat at the Opera Bar where we had views of Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and the waterfront. As you can imagine it was very busy, but totally worth it!
After the harbour, we headed into Westfield, one of the biggest malls in Sydney. We just booked a trip with Liz & Paisley to Fiji at the end of April so we were looking for island wear! Sadly it is almost Winter here so all the clothing is for colder temperatures. We didn’t have much luck but it was fun to try on!
Then, we headed to Chinatown for the Night Market. Webster had read about these Japanese buns that had octopus, crab and prawn in them and he was eager to try them! We wandered through the stalls and he got his Japanese buns (that were more doughy balls).
On Saturday, we woke up nice and early to take advantage of the sun. We headed into Circular Quay, then walked up to the Harbour Bridge. We crossed the bridge to North Sydney taking in the views along the way. This is something we really recommend doing if you’re ever in Sydney. It cost us nothing and we saw some of the best views of the harbour. The walk across was about 2km and we were really impressed with the amount of covering along the walkway, and security placed every 400m or so. Once we got to the other side we wandered around Kirribilli Markets and then took the train back to the Central side.
We spent our evening watching Queer Eye season 3, booking flights to Fiji, and getting laundry done.
On Sunday we had another sunny day so we headed to Bronte Beach. Bronte is a little bit south of Bondi Beach, and typically less busy. We spent some time people watching and enjoying the sun. Then we walked along the coastal path to Bondi Beach. We had beautiful views of the water, rocky cliffs, and surfers out in the distance! When we got to Bondi, we wandered around looking for any film crews filming Bondi Rescue. Although they weren’t filming today, the beach was packed with people! We wandered into the Bondi Market and shopped around a bit before heading home.
We spent our evening meal prepping for the week, getting some school assignments submitted, and relaxing before another busy week.
This week, we are moving to our 2nd AirBnB in Sydney. We have had such a wonderful experience over the past 6 weeks, but we are excited to live somewhere new!
