Happy Friday! As we are sorting through our photos from our August adventure, we have decided to do a quick recap for each city we visited before we arrived in London. We will post about a new city each week for the next eight weeks to get all caught up. (Don't worry...We will still post on Sunday’s about our week here in London too!)
Our first stop was Barcelona, Spain! Katie had been to Barcelona before, but it was my first time. We only had one full day in the city before we got on our cruise and I wanted to see as much as I could! We arrived in Barcelona around noon, after an overnight flight from Toronto✈️ After dropping our bags at the beautiful Renaissance Hotel we immediately headed out to explore the city.
The first thing we visited was Sagrada Familia! We took public transit (yes, in Spanish!) to reach the most beautiful church I have ever seen! The Sagrada Famillia was designed in the 1800’s by Antoni Gaudí but is still under construction... (And we thought Canadian construction took a long time...😒) At the church, we spent some time exploring the outside facades, the chapel on the main level and then went up the bell tower for a picturesque view of Barcelona. We took an elevator up to the top and slowly made out way down through VERY small stairwells. Along the way we got to see Barcelona from a bird’s eye view - it was worth the wait!
After the church, we took the long route home and went for a walk down Las Ramblas, through the Latin Quarter. The area had an amazing atmosphere and gorgeous buildings with tons of shops and restaurants. I didn’t buy anything but of course Katie had to find her “Barcelona” and “Spain” Starbucks mugs. As we made our way back to the hotel, we stopped along the main road for some traditional Spanish Tapas! Tapas are little sharing plates of unique food choices. We had calamari, fried mozzarella and a salad - I really enjoyed it, but we stopped at McDonald’s on the way home for Katie... 😒
The next morning, we woke up early to get a head start on the day. We only had five hours in the city before boarding the MSC Fantasia and I wanted to see the famous Park Güell. The park featured a number of famous statues and structures designed by Gaudí. We got there before the park even opened which made it easier to take photos in the main tourist areas. It was a beautiful park, with stunning details.
After our visit we quickly jumped into a cab and headed back to the hotel. We packed up our bags and left to board the cruise ship for a trip through the Mediterranean 🛳⚓️
